Identity Theft Case Under Review
Local law enforcement officials are reviewing yet another report regarding identity theft.
A resident of Summertown’s Shady Street reported the incident through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department shortly after 8:00 p.m. Friday. According to the victim, he received a bill from a collection agency that claimed he owed money for online activities.
The victim told deputies that the individual who set up the account had used his social security number, date of birth, and knew his mother’s maiden name. The culprit then used the account for online gambling. A total of three bets were placed, creating a total debt of some $1,500.
The victim told deputies he had no idea who may have used his identity to incur the debt. At the present time the matter remains under investigation through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division. Anyone who has information regarding the case is encouraged to contact the department at 762-3626.
